Limited palettes for still life

The two colours in this painting are permanent rose and French ultramarine blue

Still life is a handy subject as we all have many objects in our homes that we can use to paint from. I am a huge fan of using a limited palette, as I always love to have the opportunity of mixing colours and feel very satisfied when I have only used three colours and a painting looks extremely colourful. I have always been inspired by other artists’ paintings and there is nothing better than standing in front of a piece of art. Although I have thousands of art books, when I see the real thing I can understand the colour properly. Some good still-life colourists to look at include Cézanne, Corot, Matisse, Vuillard, Morandi and Bonnard. These are just a few and although they aren’t watercolourists, their brilliant use of colour will inspire you.
