The recording industry is used to existential crises. Even before Covid-19, the advent of digital streaming and app-based consumption had challenged labels to reimagine ways of generating income. Even so, the last thing they needed was a catastrophic restriction on all music making. Initially, were companies able to action any strategies to continue recording artists during the lockdown period? ‘No, absolutely not,’ says Robert von Bahr, record producer at BIS. ‘To record in the quality that BIS is famed for, we need the artists together with the production team – for ensemble, inspiration and music making beyond the bare minimum, in tune and together. This can only be done in the right atmosphere, with the constructive give-and-take between the musicians themselves and between them and the production staff.’
