MOKKA SHOKKA
Vauxhall’s got a new face... and we’re all for it
INTERVIEW JASON BARLOW
DESIGN OF THE YEAR
T he new Matrix film is out soon but you could be forgiven for thinking that you’re already living in a wibbly wobbly parallel world when TG decrees that a Vauxhall is design of the year. WTAF?
But no blue or red pills are involved here, just some inspiration, technique and a whole lot of hard work. The Mokka-e might just be 2021’s most satisfying looking new car in a field that includes a bunch of supercars and fresh work from some heavy hitters. The fact that it’s wearing the previously unfancied Vauxhall badge simply makes it all the more surprising. Looks good with that ‘visor’ front end though, right?
OK, so the design team can’t resist messing about with some dodgy contrast colour bonnets, but the basics here are super strong: the stance, proportions, surfacing and graphics are all undeniable. It’s assertive without looking angry, friendly without being cartoonish. It’s 124mm shorter than the old one and 10mm wider. Which helps.
