MATTHEW PHILLIS
In January, Rhino Africa launched a competition entitled ‘Africa’s Photographer of the Year’. The competition lasts for a year and is divided into four categories, exploring key travel destinations in Africa through a traveller’s lens. Matthew Phillis’s photograph of a leopard (pictured above), entered into this year’s Big Five category, was taken in Hluhluwe Game Reserve, South Africa. “On our way back, we were driving very slowly and quietly, when I spotted this elusive cat sitting on a rock,” says Phillis. “He nearly ran at the sound of our car, but stayed and was posing for the camera in the end.” The grand-prize winner, who will be selected by six world-leading wildlife photographers and industry experts, will receive a luxury safari for two worth US$25,000. Entrants can upload their photographs to africasphotographeroftheyear.com.
