PICKING PILLOWS
In most (but not all) parks, there are accommodation options to cater for all types of travellers. Some are better marketed than others, so research is necessary. But how do you figure out which is the right choice for you? Tamara Britten of Karibu Kenya gives some pointers, and to illustrate the dilemma, we look at a selection of the offerings in and around Amboseli National Park.
MY GUIDE AND JOY
While your choice of camp certainly influences your safari experience, more often than not it’s the guides’ who make a safari particularly memorable. Here, you give a shout out to those guides who have gone above and beyond.

Conservation
CONSERVATION LANDSCAPE
It is clear you care deeply about protecting Africa’s natural heritage. Several readers have shown an interest in knowing more about the organisations that sit behind much of the large-scale conservation initiatives across the continent. We’ll delve deeper in future issues, but let’s start with some of the bigger Africa-based players.
VOLUNTEERING
“There are a number of conservation charities across Africa that find it useful to open their doors to allow visitors to ‘help out’ and get ‘hands on’ in order to raise awareness and boost fundraising. As a tourist there is a natural desire to want to help in some way, but it is often hard to know which are genuine and which are not. Some guidance on which are genuine would be useful.”
GIVING GRACEFULLY
While readers recognise the wider positive impact of their trip, several have voiced a concern about how to contribute locally in a sensitive, respectful way. We asked Sharon Gilbert-Rivett for some advice.
