While we would suggest that the scale of Victoria Falls is impressive at any time of year—sections of it, like Devil’s Cataract, never seem to lose power—there is no doubt that the character of the falls varies greatly depending on the time of year you visit. Being aware of these changes will help you to manage your expectations. The amount of water cascading over the Victoria Falls is governed by the timing and extent of the sesonal rains that fall in the Zambezi River catchment area, many hundreds of kilometres away in northern Zambia and, primarily, Angola.
According to hydrologist Dr Richard Beilfuss, “the Zambezi River Basin has one of the most variable climates of any major river basin in the world, with an extreme range of conditions across the catchment and through time.” This means that the river and its tributaries have historically been subject to fluctuating cycles of both drought and floods.
