Discovering new, accidentally vegan products on supermarket shelves is an event that is exciting enough to warrant an entire Facebook group dedicated to the findings of keen-eyed vegans across the UK (Vegan Supermarket Finds UK). But what makes plant-based shoppers so enthralled by a certified free-from product? Reading ingredient lists becomes almost second-nature to most of us with allergens and intolerances, but when it comes to ensuring your purchases are entirely cruelty-free, there are a few tricks of the efficient-label-reading trade, which will help ensure successful purchasing of exclusively vegan products with every shop.
1 Raid the Vegan Aisle
Once hard to discover and rare to find, recent campaigning by vegan charities and groups such as Animal Aid’s #MarkItVegan campaign, has encouraged a variety of supermarkets to commit towards clear and concise vegan labelling across ownbranded plant-based product lines (huzzah!).
What’s more, the rise in popularity of veganism has placed a huge amount of demand upon supermarkets to introduce their own vegan product lines, with supermarkets almost falling over each other to outdo the competition and become the vegan place to shop! Some of our favourites include Waitrose’s vegan range and Tesco’s Free-From and Wicked Kitchen ranges. Almost every supermarket will have a free-from or vegetarian section in their chilled and frozen aisles. Once you find these areas of promised land, simply skip to step three to discover secretly vegan delicacies!
2 Look for Vegan and Vegetarian Labelling / Symbols
Most accidentally or secretly vegan items will already be labelled as suitable for vegetarians. When looking for these products, try to identify the “V” or “VG” symbols on your items, which will most likely be displayed on the front of the packaging towards the side of the product. The wording “Suitable for Vegetarians” should also be listed on the reverse of the packaging near to the allergen information. Once you’ve found your seemingly vegan, vegetarian items, a simple look over the ingredients list will confirm whether you can throw the item into your basket with joy, or continue your search for other plant-based items.
