“You’re going to need a bigger boat.” This quote from the 1975 film Jaws is, arguably, one of the most famous movie lines of all time. Jaws put sharks on the map as animals to be feared, as sadistic ocean-thieving killers, only hungry for human flesh. In reality, the antithesis is true. We, not they, are the real villains, yet mainstream media continues to stigmatise the shark. Clearly, this fish has an issue with PR.
Despite their reputation, sharks are more than just teeth. Sharks have six senses — smell, touch, taste, hearing, sight and electromagnetism — and they use complex body language cues to communicate with each other. For example, when a shark is irritated or uncomfortable you can see visible body spasms rippling along its back.
