Why should I try…? Treadmill running
From assisting your post-injury comeback to pacing your interval sessions, it’s time to embrace the benefits of the treadmill. Here’s what you need to know
While nothing quite trumps running outdoors, used smartly, the humble treadmill can be utilised to improve your running whether you’re chasing a race PB, training for a hilly event or embarking on a couch-to- 5K programme.
It’s convenient and the benefits are numerous, says running coach Alexa Duckworth-Briggs. “Treadmills are really useful when you’re pushed for time, the weather is bad or the roads and pavements are slippery, or you don’t enjoy running in the dark. Plus, they’re slightly lower impact than running on roads because the treadmill belt is sprung,” she says. As a result, the treadmill can play a really useful role in a structured rehabilitation programme
“The sprung belt absorbs some of the ground reaction force, making it more forgiving on the joints,” says physiotherapist Kerstine Herbert. “Plus the treadmill allows you to focus completely on your form, your stride, your cadence and any other changes you might be working on as part of injury recovery.”
