BETTER BY HALF
Looking for a half-marathon PB this autumn? Here’ s how the other half run…
WORDS: ELIZABETH HUFTON
Just as spring and autumn bring the best opportunities for marathon bests, these are also the seasons for running a good half, either as a warm-up or as a standalone event (particularly if you don’t have time for marathon mileage). If you’ve had a good marathon or half in the spring then training specifically for a solid half in the autumn is a great confidence boost going into next year’s preparation and, for some big races, could also offer you a qualifying time in a faster wave. For example, you can qualify for a Championship spot at the Virgin Money London Marathon by running a sub-1:30 half before the qualifying date (check virginmoneylondonmarathon.com for details as they’re confirmed).
As an experienced runner, you probably have a training plan for half-marathons that works for you (and, if not, visit womensrunninguk.co.uk/training to find some for free). But how do you make sure you’re approaching the race in the right way to bag that super-fast time? To find out, we asked the fastest woman in the UK’s fastest half-marathon: Charlotte Purdue, who won this year’s Reading Half-Marathon in an incredible 1:12:15. “I like the half-marathon because, since moving up to the marathon, it’s a great way to see what kind of shape I’m in eight weeks out from a marathon,” she says. “It’s a good training tool.”
