REEBOK SPARTAN SOUTH EAST
Sliding down a steep, dusty slope on my bum, while clutching a sandbag and discussing frictioninduced wedgies with a total stranger, isn’t how I’d normally choose to spend a Saturday afternoon, but that’s what I found myself doing in the final kilometre of the South East Spartan Sprint – and I was enjoying it!
The Spartan races are a series of challenging obstacle course races, varying in length from 5K to 14 miles. The South East event was the first race of this year’s UK series, held in the beautiful St Clere estate, not far from Sevenoaks in Kent. The Sprint is the shortest version of the race – a 5-7K course comprised of more than 20 obstacles.
The premise is simple: finish the race as quickly as possible and complete all the obstacles along the way, or do a 30-burpee penalty if you can’t complete a task. The obstacles included, but weren’t limited to, tyre-flipping, carrying logs and tyres up hills, monkey bars, spearthrowing, rope climbs, climbing over and under walls of varying heights, and crawling under barbed wire.
