“I USED TO ALWAYS TRY AND CONTROL EVERYTHING AND IN TRIATHLON YOU HAVE TO LET GO A LITTLE BIT BECAUSE LOTS OF ELEMENTS ARE OUT OF YOUR CONTROL ”
Emily-Faye Jevons loves triathlons. Not only does she get a kick from performing well, she’s also found that training is a tonic for the rigours of life

Putting the tough times behind her: like for many of us, being active is as good for Emily’s mental wellbeing as it is her physical health
Training for my first triathlon coincided with a very difficult time in my life but it’s massively helped me my mental health.” This issue’s Warrior is Dr Emily-Faye Jevons, triathlete, lecturer in sport science with a doctorate in sports nutrition.
Having suffered on and off with depression ever since she was 14, Emily-Faye has found that training for and taking part in triathlons over the past five years or so has transformed the way she manages her mental health.
She says: “The mental side of it is massive for me. In 2016, I made some big moves and went through a lot of life change, and I was probably at one of my lowest points. I struggled for quite a long time with depression, self harm and suicidal tendencies, and although I never tried to take my own life, largely due to the support I had around me, I did get to a very low point.”
The turning point came when Emily, having done a degree in sport science and a masters in nutrition, was studying for a PhD while working aswell.
Looking back on that time, it’s not hard to see why she was low and why training was just what she needed. She says: “I had a lot on my plate and my training gave me with the me-time I needed.
Even now, it allows me to take a break and switch off from work and the stresses of life.”
