Deciding to focus her attention on the 10K distance this year, mum-oftwo Ellie Hughes, from Abergavenny, found herself inadvertently bagging her fastest 5K time to date. The 33-year-old, who has only been running for two years, was training for the Women’s Running Race Series 10K event in Cardiff on 21 May when she took part in the Race for Victory 5K on 30 April – signing up purely to support her friend, who had just taken up running. Having got two 10Ks under her belt during March and April and in training for her next, physically, Ellie was at peak fitness. Mentally, too, she felt more confident and relaxed than ever about racing 5K, it being a much shorter distance than she was currently used to running. These factors combined saw her shaving 1min 41secs off her previous 5K PB.
