Advice for a reader on finding her unique writing style, from Jane Wenham Jones
I have just received some disappointing – and confusing – feedback on my first novel. The reader said she liked the storyline and the characters were good but that she had not found my prose style very ‘compelling’ and that she felt I still needed time to ‘develop my voice’. I don’t really know what she means. I have been writing for some years (producing over forty short stories) and I have now completed a 90,000 word manuscript. I would have thought that in that time my ‘voice’ would have done all the developing it was going to do. How do I progress it further? Or do I just accept that the way I write is not up to scratch?
