EDITOR’S LETTER
Dear Reader
Oh to be an author, whiling away the hours in an ivory tower gently rubbing words against each other. Okay, maybe it wasn’t quite that fanciful in your head, but at some stage, we’ve all been drawn to the notion of a writer’s life, complete with not entirely accurate assumptions about what that actually entails. I suppose it’s only fitting that as writers we’ve collectively dreamt up this fantastical mythology about the way things were for our forebears and how much more easily they could live for their art. But while that was never quite true, it can’t be denied that the 21st century writer must master many more skills, and keep track of a much wider range of activities, than was expected even thirty years ago. Dazed and confused, we flit between being our own publicists, salespeople, archivists, social media managers (a new role, granted)… some of us even double up as designers and proofreaders. Occasionally, if we’re lucky, there’s time to squeeze in the odd bit of writing.
