Practical Pigs  |  Practical Pigs Summer 2013
There’s a bit of a ‘good health’ theme running
through this issue, which is no bad thing in these
cash-strapped times. After all, the need to
maintain the highest of welfare and husbandry
standards for the pigs that depend on you,
remains as imperative as ever. As such, it’s vital
that keepers aren’t tempted to save money by
cutting corners.
The desire to keep your pigs healthy should
be at the heart of everything you do. Just
because money may be tight, doesn’t mean
that they should suffer because you allow your
standards to fall. Your obligation to them is an
important one, and one that, should push
come to shove, is underpinned by the letter of
the law.
Thankfully, pigs can’t really be described as
demanding animals to keep. Their needs are
simple and there isn’t a great deal to go wrong
if you keep things up to scratch. That’s a big ‘if ’,
though. A lack of attention, poor environment
or a failure to provide the basics, can quickly
pitch you and your pigs into trouble, so don’t let
it happen.
