£50,000 – it’s hardly small change, is it? But, when you can spend £40k (or more) on a mainstream family car like a BMW 3-Series estate, it doesn’t seem so much for a (vastly more versatile) motorhome or campervan.
In this issue, we review a selection of new vehicles – 14 of them – that you can buy for around £50k.
What really impresses when you analyse this sector is that there are new models that sacrifice some of the bling, but none of the practicality, to make them more affordable.
Hillside’s Birchover, for example, is a VW campervan that’s a cool £20k less than a new California Ocean.
Then, there’s Benimar’s Primero – a compact coachbuilt that omits some of its sister Mileo’s luxuries but will be 99% as good to use.
But, perhaps, most impressive is the Hobby Vantana OnTour which saves you a whopping £12,000 in comparison with the Premium spec version of the same vehicle – call that 480 nights of free campsites, or nearly 9,500 litres of diesel!
I’ve just come back from Norway, where I camped in temperatures down to minus 17 degrees in a Vantana OnTour, which has the same heating and insulation as its more expensive cousins. I never longed for more spec and I’m excited to see Hobby applying the same cost-cutting approach on its Optima low-profiles. I tried one of those, too – more on that in a future issue.
