Italy’s often turbulent airline market has claimed more than its fair share of victims over the years. In this decade alone, we’ve seen the demise of iconic former flag carrier Alitalia, the Qatar Airways-backed Air Italy and Blue Panorama Airlines.
Europe’s low-cost powerhouses have capitalised on this turmoil, seizing control of the domestic market. Today, Ryanair is the biggest carrier in Italy by some margin, accounting for almost one in every two seats, closely followed by Wizz Air, easyJet and Volotea. Throw new state-backed national airline ITA Airways into the mix and it becomes an even more daunting sector in which to compete, yet that’s exactly what new entrant Aeroitalia is doing.
