The surprise package of Sworders’ (22% buyer’s premium) Homes and Interiors sale of August 1 was this early buff stoneware jug of a type commonly associated with the potteries of Fulham and Vauxhall.
Estimated at £60-80, it sold at £3200. It is unusual for its form – mugs are more common but this 5in (13cm) high vessel has a spout – and is applied with a relief moulded fouled anchor which probably denotes the name of a tavern. Similar examples are known with a range of popular tavern signs.
