Members of the Arran Kayak Club held their first race by circumnavigating Holy Isle in a battle against the elements and strong competition from each other. Participants set off from Lamlash Pier on a bright but breezy morning. Force three south westerlies made for challenging conditions during the race, with most boats enjoying some sustained surfing on the east side of Holy Isle, and with paddlers finishing into a stiff headwind on the clockwise circumnavigation.
Officials on the dock clocked Andrew Rigby’s winning time as one hour and 21 minutes. Andrew is a strong competitor and a regular sight off the coast in his black and white sea kayak.
Second placed Andy Mc- Namara managed to keep up with Andrew until Wee Donald (the lighthouse), before falling a few minutes behind during the final stretch home into the headwind. Andy finished in one hour and 25 minutes.
