UNDER-17s IN BAL
ON the debate as to whether under-17 men should compete in the British Athletics League, Stretford AC entered the BAL for 1974, having won the 1973 qualifying match after several years of disappointment. On reaching the final match with promotion already achieved, the under-17 component of the team, which already included English Schools inter 400m champion Martin Francis, was expanded to include two further English Schools intermediate champions, Geoff Whaley (shot) and Andy Sparkes (hammer), plus runner-up Len Evans (javelin), third-placed David Golley (triple jump) and fifth-placed Norman Duffin (high jump). The outcome was victory by a record margin as the youths were all up to par.
