The September issue of AW takes a look ahead to the return of major road running events.

As the 40th Great North Run approaches, we speak to event founder Sir Brendan Foster about the idea which turned into a running phenomenon and hear about the moments which have made it so special.

After last year's elite-only event on a lapped course around St James's Park, the London Marathon will return in a more familiar guise on its traditional route and with thousands of mass runners hitting the streets again. We delve into the event and pick out the key athletes who will be competing at the sharp end across the international, British and wheelchair races.
There's also a look at how these big events have had to adapt in times of Covid to make sure they proceed safely.

With distance running coming to the fore, resident Statto Steve Smythe is attempting to settle the debate around the identity of the greatest male distance runner of all time. See if you agree with his verdict!

Away from the roads, the Paralympics in Tokyo played host to a number of amazing stories and we look at a potentially seminal sprinting moment involving Britain's Jonnie Peacock.

There were also some remarkable performances and talking points to come from the Diamond League meetings and we analyse the big moments from the track and the field as well as the 24 hour and half-marathon world record-breaking runs.

Mark Woods investigates whether or not placing all responsibility on the athletes is the best way for the anti-doping system to operate.

Also featuring exclusive interviews with Olympic marathon bronze medallist Molly Seidel, ultra runner Beth Pascall, the British 4x400m relay world champions from 1991 and a packed performance section, this is an issue not to be missed.
