Australian Railway History  |  June 2017
Railway hotels have been a significant feature of our towns and cities over the years, but they have not been covered in Australian Railway History and its forerunner magazines. This is addressed in the June 2017 issue with a well-researched and illustrated article, 'Railway Pubs in Orange' by Euan Greer and Ross Maroney. Most were established in anticipation of the opening of the Great Western Railway to Orange on 19 April 1877 and remarkably two of these original hotels were still operating in 2017.
Richard Mathews offers a detailed articles on the Train Destination Boards used on the locomotives hauling suburban trains in Sydney and Newcastle between 1891 ans 1922, which incorporates the design and manufacture of the boards and roller blinds with station names.
The issue rounds off with another of Mike Quirk's detailed articles on railway accidents in Queensland, this time it was a rear-end collision between a mixed train and a following stock special train at Humphery on the Maryborough to Monto Line in Central Queensland in which one passenger died and four were seriously injured.
