Black+White Photography  |  Winter 2009
The best thing for me about Christmas is the promise of the New Year. I know it’s a bit weird but I’ve always been the same – I hurl myself into January full of wild enthusiasm, plans and promises. I love that sense of renewal and hope that I feel at that time of year. And yes, it’s one of my most productive times for photography. Ideas for new projects come rushing to the surface and I start learning new techniques or approaches. It’s a time of great vibrancy. But yes, you’ve guessed it. By March I start to flag. All around me new shoots are springing up and there I am, run out of steam. But. This year is going to be different. I have already planned to end one current project in January and start another. I will pace myself. I will be realistic. That fine balance between wild enthusiasm and realistic expectations is the key, I’m convinced, to achieving creative satisfaction. And that’s what I love when I see the work that you, the reader, send in to us. Black & white photography takes that extra bit of effort to achieve – there is thought, time and passion put into it. And it shows. So finish that project, get it printed up and send it in. We want to see it.
