ONE LITTLE INDEPENDENT/BURNING SHED
★★★★/★★☆
No-Man’s 1990 debut single was an unlikely Donovan cover, Colours, unwittingly pre-empting trip-hop and tailormade for critics who were fond of ornate, melodramatic descriptions. With Tim Bowness’ breathy melancholy and Steven Wilson’s arrangements distinguished by dusty beats and violin flourishes, it was moving, elegant, and loosely indicative of their urge to create art-pop in the mould of Japan or Trevor Horn’s ambitious ZTT aesthetic.
