Given their later association and the fact he co-produces her debut album, it’s understandable that when she released 1984’s The Glamorous Life – reissued on vinyl for Black History Month – some people assumed Sheila Escovedo was another Prince protégée. Sheila, however, was no ingénue: she came from a highly musical family and had already performed with multiple stars, including as a percussionist for Marvin Gaye’s live band the year before.
