THE VIDEOS
GAMES WITHOUT FRONTIERS
Of course Peter Gabriel would go on to conquer MTV with the ground-breaking Sledgehammer video (with help from stop-motion animator, Nick Park of Wallace & Gromit fame) and, before that, Shock The Monkey. But not one to shy away from the bright lights, Gabriel was already demonstrating a knack for the video format on Games Without Frontiers, before video was really even properly a thing. This cuts new scenes of him singing the track against archive footage of educational videos and propaganda-style promos, marching uniformed figures and athletics tournaments (that brings to mind the 1936 Berlin Olympics). The visuals play upon the lyrical contrasts of the childlike naivety and military threat. In fact, three incarnations or edits exist, including a 2004 reworking for his Play DVD, which is now, according to Gabriel, the definitive version.
