During New Order’s breaks in the 90s, Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert released two albums as The Other Two. The Other Two & You, released in 1993, was followed six years later by Super Highways. “We were forced into our life as The Other Two,” laughs Gillian. “New Order weren’t going to continue when we started in ’91, so me and Stephen thought, ‘Well, we’d better do something!’” They initially approached Kim Wilde to be their singer. “We tried Kim singing on our first single Tasty Fish,” says Gillian. “We thought about getting more singers in for other songs, too. And then I thought, ‘Why don’t I try myself and see what happens?’ New Order’s producer Stephen Hague was brilliant in encouraging me to think like that. He said I should try having a few singing lessons, just to see if I could do it. And that’s how I approached both albums – more than anything, I was interested in seeing if I could actually do it. The Other Two was just another experiment,
really.” Would The Other Two ever make more music, we ask? “There’d have to be some element of doing it live,” Gillian muses. “And singing live is something I’ve always been really unsure about.”
