What you need:
Windows 10 or 11
The fantastic free file manager Files has made several appearances in this section in 2024, and with good reason. It’s regularly updated with clever features and interface improvements that leave File Explorer in Windows looking dated and dull.
Files 3.8 rounds off the year with another raft of new tools and tweaks that make it even easier to manage your files and folders. These include a more efficient way to customise the coloured category tags you assign to items. Right-click the Tags heading in the sidebar and choose ‘Manage tags’ to open the Settings panel. Here you can change the names and colours of tags, create new ones and delete those you no longer need.
Files has also added new ‘actions’ that let you perform tasks faster from its Command Palette – press Ctrl+Shift+P to open this feature. For example, you can now close all or selected tabs by choosing the relevant action, and copy the path of the current tab to jump straight to that sub-folder in future.
