In tricky light, it’s always worth checking the image’s histogram on your screen.
The histogram is a graphic representation of the tones in an image with blacks (shadows) on the left, whites (highlights) on the right and mid-tones in between.
An underexposed image (such as the example here) will be left-side dominant and have data bleeding off to the left while overexposure will have the graph off to the right. In both instances, adjust the exposure settings, take another shot and check the histogram again until the data is within the boundaries of the graph.
