A friend recently asked, “How many countries have legalised same-sex marriage?” and I realised, in that moment, that I actually wasn’t all that sure. A handful of the most recent countries to do so, including Ecuador, Taiwan – the first in Asia – and Austria came to mind, but I wasn’t sure precisely how many had come before, or indeed who had led the way.
As we approach 2020, and the 20th anniversary of the first ever country to legally recognise same-sex marriage, it seems a good time to reflect upon how the push for #MarriageEquality has progressed across the world. Which countries kickstarted the marriage equality movement? Who’s likely to legalise it next? And will we ever see a majority of nations legally recognise same-sex (or indeed, non-binary) marriages? History buffs, assemble.
