D Baker was enormously popular and saw himself as an ambassador for the series, telling DWM’s Richard Marson in 1984: “I had to carry the concept of this semi-perfect man into my own life, so that if there were children around I wouldn’t be seen by them as a disappointment.” Though admitting that this could be “very, very exhausting at times,” he emphasised that “Doctor Who comes with this responsibility.”
