Drama and Theatre  |  Summer 1 1920
In Drama & Theatre Summer 1, we report on programmes which were taking place in schools in the run-up to their recent closure, and which we sincerely hope will be up-and-running again soon. Take inspiration from the work of Campbell Russell, who has been taking issues of social justice into primary schools and encouraging political engagement through drama; and read about theatre company Punchdrunk’s new teacher training programme, which aims to introduce immersive theatre techniques into the teaching of all subjects.
Practical guides this issue include an introduction to Robert Lepage, a full page on using drama for teaching oracy, and a lesson plan called ‘The Sound of Silence’ – one which can easily be adapted to remote teaching in the new age of self-isolation. We also explore 11 plays for performance and study, including ‘5 great plays that put female roles centre-stage’, and the Editor reviews an online theatre streaming service which is free to schools and will be invaluable while students and teachers are confined to their homes.
