THE NORWEGIAN ACTOR HAS BROKEN BIG IN JOACHIM TRIER’S MILLENNIAL ROMANCE THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD
ON GETTING INVOLVED IN THE FILM
I already knew and loved Joachim’s earlier work; it’s been really important to me. I met him at a few parties — he thought I was fun to hang out with, and asked me if I wanted to be in the film. And I already knew [the film’s star] Renate Reinsve because we went to theatre school together, which meant that with the intimate moments we could jump to the core and explore our characters’ love in a deeper way. Joachim loves to rehearse so we had lots of time together. We ended up becoming like a family.
ON THE FILM’S INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS
It’s been crazy! At the premiere in Cannes the audience was clapping for eight minutes. Then the Oscar nominations came — it was overwhelming, but in a good way. And Paul Thomas Anderson said he loved the film, and for me that was bigger than any nomination. That meant everything to me.
ON HIS ACTING FUTURE
I’m currently playing Hamlet, which theatre-wise is the coolest thing I’ve done. I’d love to do some English-language films, because like music, film has no language barrier. Especially now with Scandinavian actors speaking English and English actors speaking Scandinavian. It feels like a very open world right now.
