Large-leaved plants such as bergenias and hostas will add light and interest to gloomy areas
Plant large-leaved perennials to brighten up a shady area. Large leaves are reflective, so even if the foliage colours are muted, the strong outlines and shapes will stand out. Choose plants such as hosta, bergenia and brunneras, especially those with silver variegation. Give them a long soak in their pots before planting out.
Place them in the border, in their pots, to help you decide where to put them, then knock off the pots and plant them, firming well before soaking again. If the shade is cast by trees, there will be competition for moisture, so keep the new plants watered while they establish.
