Gardens Illustrated  |  January 2023
The January issue of Gardens Illustrated is packed with inspiration for the year ahead. Cassian Schmidt, director of Hermannshof botanical garden in Germany, has selected 100 beautiful and resilient plants that can meet the challenges gardeners are facing due to climate change. Eight leading designers including Jinny Blom, Jo Thompson and Tom Massey make their predictions for trends in garden design for 2023. Matthew Pottage, Curator at RHS Garden Wisley, recommends worthy replacements for box hedging and topiary, now facing the double threat of box tree caterpillar and box blight. Dan Pearson, Bernard Trainor and other top horticulturalists reflect on the legacy of the legendary plantswoman, Beth Chatto, who would have turned 100 this year. We visit a gravel garden in southern France designed by James Basson, a beautiful naturalistic garden in Spain created by Álvaro Sampedro and a snowdrop-filled garden in Germany. We also highlight places to see stunning wildflower spectacles around the world, from the machair of the Outer Hebrides to the meadows of Romania and the Namaqua Desert of South Africa. Meanwhile our columnist, Alice Vincent, extolls the virtues of doing nothing in the garden in January.
