German light bicycle infantr y line up wearing gas masks in Austria. Only 18 percent of German divisions were fully mechanised by 1941, leaving their infantry highly reliant on bicycles to keep up with advances, par ticularly during the invasions of Norway and Poland. Bicycles became impor tant to the Wehrmacht once more towards the end of the war in response to fuel shor tages. On 6 October 1944, German leadership ordered all bicycles in Italy, Holland and Denmark to be confiscated to supply the Wehrmacht, a blow to the occupied nations’ agriculture and industr y as workers often had to bike to work.
