The Battle of Cambrai, fought one hundred years ago this month, has long been held as a turning point in the history of battlefield technology, the first large-scale tank offensive. Yet, however impressive this milestone is historically, in the context of World War I the battle was far from a triumph. This issue, John Taylor explores how the early British successes at Cambrai were brought about by the sturdy Mark IVs and how this turned into disaster in the face of a huge German counter-offensive.
