A Kathryn Jaquet answers: A combination noseband is designed to apply pressure both at the front of the face (it sits lower than a conventional cavesson noseband but higher than a drop) and behind it (in the chin groove). Combination nosebands can be useful for horses who are strong but have sensitive mouths, giving the rider more control without having to use a stronger bit.
