The Autumn issue of International Piano features on the cover the Russian pianist Anna Geniushene, whose latest album – ‘Opus 1’ on the Fuga Libera label – presents the first published works by a range of Romantic composers. Anna Geniushene won the Silver Medal in the 2022 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, coming second to Yunchan Lim, and she talks to Harriet Smith about her musical life and her love of programme-building. In another major feature, Andrew Hallifax presents fascinating and personal history of electrical recording, looking back on 100 years since electrical microphones radically changed the history of recorded music.
In our regular columns this issue, Mark Ainley reflects on the artistry of the Chilean pianist Rosita Renard, who died in 1949. In his ‘Musings of a Musician’ column, Kenneth Hamilton considers the Liszt-inspired Piano Sonata by Julius Reubke, while Bryce Morrison’s ‘Polarising Pianists’ column alights on the playing of the late Anatol Ugorski, whose strikingly individual recordings for DG continue to divide opinion. In a new column for International Piano, Jeremy Nicholas reminds us of long-forgotten music, musicians or recordings, beginning by looking back at the career of Bernhard Stavenhagen.
