I can’t believe that autumn has come round so soon, but I have to admit I’m rather pleased as it’s my favourite season. You can’t beat a walk through the British countryside at this time of year, from the jewel-like colours of the trees as their leaves change from green to russet, to the wonderful foraging opportunities on offer in our hedgerows, including rose hips, fungi, blackberries and crab apples, autumn has so much to enjoy. In this issue we take a look at some of the best places in the UK to see autumn in all its glory (p.90), and we’ve included lots of creative ideas to bring the colours of autumn into your home with beautiful seasonal decorations (p.16 and p.78). We’ve even got some fun outdoor projects to keep the children busy making mini woodland worlds to fire their imagination (p.96). And don’t forget to take a look at our feature on the seasonal starling murmurations that are filling our skies right now (p.108). It’s a truly wonderful natural spectacle that’s free to watch and will delight the whole family. Autumn is traditionally a time of bounty and you’ll find plenty of delicious recipes in this issue to make the most of what’s in season, from hearty game dishes (p.52), tasty uses for quince (p.44) and some gorgeous edible gift ideas (p.60). If you’re feeling crafty, why not try making our simple to sew mittens (p.99)? They’re so quick to stitch and would make great gifts this coming Christmas. Talking of which, don’t forget to turn to page 36 to see the winning shots in our 2015 photo competition, they’re really stunning and will all be featured in our 2016 LandLove calendar. It makes a great present idea and I know I’ll be buying some for my nearest and dearest this Christmas. In the meantime, I hope you find time to head outdoors and enjoy all this wonderful season has to offer.
