Habibi Funk’s Jannis Stürtz didn’t intend to set up a label fixated on funk-and-soul-inspired music from the Arab world, but during a chance trip to Casablanca with his other label Jakarta Records five years ago, he saw the light. In the back room of an electronics shop, Stürtz dusted off a 7” single featuring a raw cover of James Brown’s Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag by Fadaul Et Les Privilèges. Sung entirely in Arabic, it kicks like a mule. Stürtz was hooked.
