In 1995 Britain was shocked by the murder of little Sophie Hook. “You are a fiend and your crimes are every parent’s worst nightmare come to pass,” the judge told the killer Howard Hughes after his conviction.
Stepsisters Alice and Edna Rowley had been running their grocery shop in Sparkhill, Birmingham, for half a century and were well-liked in the local community. The pair had survived two world wars and never harmed anyone, but on the night of December 22nd, 1987 – 30 years ago this month – they were murdered by an unknown killer or killers. Police reckoned that the Rowleys had disturbed burglars, as Christmas presents and cash had been taken. Did the victims know their killer/s? The case remains open. Surely it can still be solved.
