Bloody waters The Imjin War at sea, 1592–1598
On 17 December 1598, Admiral Yi Sun-sin, Korea’s greatest military hero, lay dying in the arms of his men on the deck of his flagship. Around his battle-scarred vessel floated the broken and burning remains of some 200 Japanese ships. The Battle of Noryang, Joseon Korea’s parting ‘gift’ to the withdrawing Japanese armies, brought six years of brutal conflict to an end. That the final battle took place at sea was most appropriate indeed.

Dracula's men
The appearance and tactics of Wallachia’s soldiers in the fifteenth century are still shrouded in myths and misconceptions. Whereas some imagine the Wallachians as primitive and poorly equipped, others see them akin to how Sergiu Nicolaescu, one of the greatest Romanian movie producers, showed them in his blockbuster Mircea (1989).

A stately edifice of large extent
Glasgow’s thirteenth-century cathedral is the city’s oldest building. Visitors have flocked to the site for centuries, starting with medieval pilgrims visiting the tomb of Saint Mungo. Before Covid struck, visitor numbers exceeded 400,000 per year.
