With unrest dominating their hometown of Los Angeles, the industrial metallers have fled to the remote desert of Joshua Tree to start work on a new record
HEY LEX, HOW’S IT GOING?Lex Mincolla (vocals): “I’m doing great. We somehow convinced the label to get us this house out in Joshua Tree, because we’ve all been stuck in our apartments in Los Angeles for the past three months, losing our minds. As much as we can work non-locally, by passing files around, it’s certainly not the best way to get a vibe, so we’ve just moved all our gear here, which is three hours outside of LA, in the middle of absolute nowhere. We’re isolated, and amongst a lot of interesting vibes out here, so we’ll see how that informs the artistic process.”
DID YOU SEE ANY OF THE UNREST IN LOS ANGELES?
“Absolutely. I live right there in the midst of it. And for me, it was the nail-biting anxiety of the nightly soundscape of what sounds like fireworks, explosions, helicopters, sirens. After two months, you’re like, ‘Can we just get the fuck out of here?’ For the most part the protests were largely very peaceful. I think when cops showed up is when they became un-peaceful, because nothing is peaceful when you shoot tear gas into the crowd. I think there’s some sort of golden corner of optimism in there, though, where I think that we’re on the precipice of some serious change, and it’s going to take a lot longer than everyone’s imagining it to, but at least we’re sort of beginning it.”
