MiniWorld HQ was full of cheer on 29 January when Alastair Vines telephoned to say that he and Willy Cave had achieved first in class, first Mini and top Brit on the Rallye Monte Carlo Historique. An awesome
achievement! And it was made all the sweeter due to it being the 50th anniversary since Paddy Hopkirk and Henry Liddon won the Monte outright in 1964. The Automobile Club de Monaco allowed a larger
number of Mini entries this year because of this special anniversary
year. 22 Minis entered the gruelling RMCH and 18 of them finished so they really did us Mini fans proud! As we are now well into the 55th anniversary of the Mini we bring you the story of a 1959 Mini that has been restored by VDL Nedcar in the Netherlands as they waited for the New Mini plant to begin production. The Mini's owner was helped along each step of the process by the 1959 Mini Register – a fantastic group of friends who are dedicated to preserving and restoring 1959 Minis and are doing a brilliant job of it. Also inside this issue you'll find a fantastic mix of Minis and variants, from a motorsport-inspired 1275GT and a turbocharged saloon to a restored Mk1 Riley Elf. There's also a practical guide to rebuilding HIF carbs and an interesting feature on the Rotodip rustproofi ng process, with some fantastic photos of Minis, and other
cars, being dipped in BMC Australia's Zetland plant during the 1960s.
