My workbench has been quiet this past month, with any time for practical modelling being concentrated on my ‘OO’ layout. The industrial complex that forms much of the backscene is beginning to take shape, thanks to some kit-bashing and scratchbuilding.
While a low-relief warehouse-cum-factory will dominate the scene, I needed a few ancillary buildings to sit on either side, one of which is nearing completion. Based on the Stoney’s Workshops kit, from Scale Model Scenery, the laser-cut walls form the basic structure but, instead of using the supplied printed paper overlays, I’ve created my own custom cladding from embossed plastic sheet.
The kit consists of three individual workshop buildings, which can be grouped together in various ways, or they can also be built as free-standing structures. A plethora of finely rendered window frames, sills, doors, gutters and drainpipes is also provided, with a few spare parts too. While I assembled the fabric of the gabled building without modification, one of the other structures had to be trimmed to form a small extension, better suiting the available space.
