BY THE middle of last week, it was estimated that the same amount of salt had been used to keep roads across Lochaber clear of snow and ice as had been used in the whole of the previous winter, writes Mark Entwistle.
But Highland Council roads operations manager Richard Porteous assured last week’s meeting of the Lochaber Area Committee that salt stocks would not run out, with a boat-load of grit arriving at Strontian last week.
‘Sustained snow conditions have seen us use as much salt from our Strontian depot already as we did in the whole of the last winter and we are only half way through this winter – but we won’t run out of salt,’ he said.
