The 105th issue of R.M.Williams OUTBACK explores philanthropy in the bush and the vital role it plays in keeping communities alive. Broadly defined, philanthropy is the desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes. Fortunately, that desire in and for rural and regional Australia is strong with two trends emerging: place-based giving – by people who have a connection to somewhere and want to see good things happen there – and the set up of community foundations; a case of locals funding the needs in their own communities.
