How to survive the court
by making the king laugh
There was little joy in the life of a court jester. Their appearance and mannerisms were mocked, their jokes quickly grew stale, and every word had to be chosen with care—one ill-timed quip could turn royal favour into wrath. Worse still, jesters were often torn from their families, bound to follow the king wherever he went— even onto the battlefield. And despite their wit and cleverness, they bore the official title of “fool.” All told, the jester’s role was far from enviable.
